Moving to a new country is the adventure of a lifetime! But it can also come with some unexpected twists, like culture shock or homesickness. When this happens it’s important to remember that your feelings are completely normal, and that they won’t last forever.
There are many things you can do to get through this adjustment period. Here are 5 ways you can transition comfortably into your new life in the Netherlands.
1. Make a Bucket List for Exploring the Netherlands
Write down everything you want to experience during your au pair year, whether it be visiting Amsterdam or trying a classic stroopwafel. And then check these items off your list as you do them. This will help keep you focused on all the experiences and adventures you’re destined to have here in the Netherlands!
2. Keep in Touch With Family and Friends
It’s very easy to communicate with your loved ones back home and it’s important that you have their support. However, try not to spend hours every day on Facetime, this could cause you to miss out on what’s happening around you. Try meeting new friends to plan coffee dates with or even if it is just strolling the canals of Amsterdam with friends.
3. Do Something You Love
Did you use to go to the gym in your home country? Maybe you belonged to a church? Whatever hobby you love, be sure to continue it in the Netherlands. This will make you feel comfortable and it’s a great way to meet people!
4. Stay Healthy
Find a balance between trying new exciting foods and getting the fruits and vegetables that you need! This, as well as exercising, can boost your mood. Try to be active on a regular basis, even if it’s a walk with your host kids or fellow Au pairs.
5. Document Your Journey
Journaling your experiences is a great way to work through your emotions. It will also help you remember your au pair year! If you don’t like to journal, you can also keep a video or picture diary.
Finally, remember that you are not alone. Your fellow Au pairs, host family and agency are here to help you have a wonderful experience.
Welcome to the Netherlands!
